Heart of Stone by Ben Galley

This is the first book by Ben Galley that I‘ve read and i’m not disappointed. Where has this guy been hiding why haven’t I heard of him before. I need to go and find some of this guys other books.

We start off with the creation of a wind cut stone Golem (man made) and the last of his kind. His name is Task was specifically designed for war. Task has been sold from the day of his creation to warmongers who are set on nothing but destruction. Task is ancient over 400+ years old and has been some through some wars. The only thing is that Task has feelings and emotions that he tries to suppress as a Golem isn’t supposed to have these. Task has been ordered to listen to his owners and do what hes told. Task has been through the mill and never got close to people (or skin bags as he calls them) that’s until he meets a little girl called Lesky.

Lesky is a table girl. Quite young with a old head on her shoulders. She sneaks around without being heard. She can sneak up on Task and that’s a very hard thing to do. I think Lesky is the character that keeps this book together. Despite her up bringing and hard life she just gets on with everything and takes it in her stride. She is a lot stronger than she thinks she is.

The characters in this book all have their part and fit in well with the story. Lesky is the only one that really stood out for me. The way she has been written is amazingly well done To be honest she could have a stand alone book about what happened after this book ended.

You do need to be on the ball with this book. If you skip through or don’t remember whats going on it will be confusing. During the end of the book it all ties itself together for a very good ending. It’s a shame that this book is just a one off as I’d like to read more about the characters. Hopefully Ben might write a spin off book. I just want to read more about the Golems 😉

Biography

Ben Galley is an author of dark and epic fantasy books who currently hails from Victoria, Canada. Since publishing his debut The Written in 2010, Ben has released a range of award-winning fantasy novels, including the weird western Bloodrush and the epic standalone The Heart of Stone. He is also the author of the brand new Chasing Graves Trilogy.

When he isn’t conjuring up strange new stories or arguing the finer points of magic and dragons, Ben works as a self-publishing consultant, helping fellow authors from around the world to publish their books.

Ben enjoys exploring the Canadian wilds and sipping Scotch single malts, and will forever and always play a dark elf in The Elder Scrolls. One day he hopes to live in an epic treehouse in the mountains.

Ben can be found on Twitter or vlogging on YouTube @BenGalley, or loitering on Facebook and Instagram @BenGalleyAuthor. You can also get a free eBook copy of his epic fantasy The Written at http://www.bengalley.com

My small review- 4.5/5 my only criticism would be that it did take a while to get the book rolling. I understand that it did need to do character build ups and backgrounds so you understood the story properly. So definitely worth a read. So please give it a go.
